Deaf Awareness Training

Deaf Awareness Training (DAT) is one of our specialities. As a charity which has supported those who are Deaf/hard of hearing for over 140 years, we have extensive experience of not only supporting this community directly but also of helping other organisations understand and respond to the needs of those who are Deaf/hard of hearing.

Our DAT is one of our most popular training sessions with employers, professionals and individuals. Our training is tailored to your needs, creating a bespoke, interactive and engaging training session which will help you and your employees communicate more effectively with Deaf employees and customers.

What does DAT cover?

Every DAT session is bespoke, built around your needs and organisational priorities with our experienced DAT trainers, who are themselves Deaf, working with you to design your course. Key topics in every course include:

  • Different types of deafness and hearing loss
  • Different communication methods
  • Barriers experienced by Deaf people
  • How to overcome barriers
  • Supporting clear communication

How is DAT delivered?

  • DAT can be delivered face to face or online depending on your needs.
  • This is approximately a 3 hour training session.

We also deliver Bespoke British Sign Language (BSL) courses  which can give your employees a basic understanding of BSL enabling them to confidently greet Deaf customers and have basic conversations, making your Deaf employees or customers feel welcomed and included.
