Interview Tips
Going for a job interview can be nerve-racking, especially if you’re concerned about how you might be viewed if you are Deaf or have a sight impairment. You might also be worried about whether your access needs will be met. Here are some tips to help you feel less anxious and more prepared for your interview.
Research
Research the company including the company’s values and areas of work.Research the role so that you understand what the role is and why you are a goodfit.
Practise
Practise interview questions you think might be asked. Look online if you needto find some example questions and ask a friend to help.
Use the STAR technique when you give examples based on your experience:
- Situation – Explain the situation you were in
- Task – Explain the task you were given
- Action – Describe the actions you took
- Response – Explain the result and anything you learnt from the experience
Ask for assistance
If you have specific access requirements, for example, if you need communication support or information to be provided in a different format, ask for this and for confirmation it has been arranged. Remember, you can apply to Access to Work for things like an interpreter at interviews.
Educate employers
Some employers may not have met someone with a sensory impairment before, before the interview, you can inform interviewers how they can support you. Unfortunately, some employers may have misconceptions about people who are Deaf or have a sight impairment, but minds can be changed. Explain why you are perfect for the role and any technology that can assist you in doing it. Explain the positives of being Deaf, hard of hearing or sight impaired, why it won’t limit you in the workplace and what you will bring to the role.
Confidence is key
Have belief in yourself and your skills, remember you have the skills, experience and qualifications to do the job and you’re prepared for the interview.
Be proud
Be proud of who you are, be proud of your achievements and let yourself shine!
