Deaf Health Champions Project

Deaf Health Champions Project

This project works to break barriers to health information and support, helping deaf people in Birmingham live healthier, more connected lives.

This is a 3‑year health project that aims to improve the health and life chances of deaf people living across Birmingham.

The project is funded by Fairer Futures Funding (FFF) Citywide Partnerships and supports people at different stages of life.

The project is for:

  • Children (aged 5+)
  • Young People
  • Adults
  • Older Adults (65+)

Throughout this document, the term “deaf” is used as an inclusive term that refers to D/deaf people and those who are hard of hearing.

Our Project Aim

Our aim is to break down barriers to health information and support for deaf people in Birmingham.

We want to make sure Deaf people can:

  • Access clear and understandable health information
  • Get support in BSL and other accessible formats
  • Understand their health and make informed choices
  • Feel confident, independent, and supported
  • Have better health, wellbeing, and life chances

Health Barriers and Their Impact

Many Deaf people experience health inequalities because information, services, and support are often not accessible.

This can lead to:

  • Higher levels of depression and anxiety
  • Increased risk of long‑term health conditions
  • Lower levels of physical activity
  • Greater risk of falls in older age
  • Poorer maternal health outcomes
  • Higher rates of isolation, abuse, and lack of independence
  • Lower educational attainment
  • Higher unemployment

These inequalities can have a long‑term impact on health, wellbeing, and quality of life.

Mentoring

As part of the project, we offer a Deaf mentoring service. Mentoring is delivered by Bhavana (Bhav).

Benefits of Mentoring:

  • One‑to‑one mentoring sessions
  • Group mentoring sessions (group frequency to be confirmed)
  • Support provided in BSL
  • Help understanding health information
  • Support with appointments and services
  • Help to build confidence and wellbeing

Accessible Health Information

We will work with health professionals to share clear and accessible health information for Deaf.

This will include:

  • Health information delivered in BSL and accessible formats
  • Sessions led or supported by qualified health professionals
  • Information explained in a clear, simple way
  • Time for questions and discussion

Physical Activities and Wellbeing

The project will also include physical activity sessions to support health and wellbeing.

These activities will:

  • Be accessible and Deaf‑friendly
  • Support physical health, confidence, and mental wellbeing
  • Be suitable for different ages and abilities
  • Take place in a safe, supportive environment

Physical activity can help improve:

  • Mental wellbeing
  • Confidence and independence
  • Heart and lung health
  • Social connection and reduced isolation

We’re excited to share more details about activities and session times as the project develops.
