Asnath’s story

Talented young athlete Asnath is passionate about sport but was often frustrated by the lack of opportunities for young Deaf girls in her home town of Birmingham.

Talented young athlete Asnath lives in Birmingham and is passionate about sport. She was often frustrated by the lack of access to sporting opportunities for young Deaf girls. Asnath contacted BID’s sports project team, who helped her set up a local deaf ladies football team. This grew over time and became a regular weekly activity for the local community. This success was swiftly followed by another, Asnath received news from the FA that she had been selected to take part in the World Deaf Futsal Championships where she hoped to bring back a medal for England.

    Asnath’s told us:
“I am really proud that I was involved in setting up the Deaf Ladies football team with BID Services.
I love sport and a few months ago, attended the Deaf Athletics Championship in Poland, competing for Team GB in the 100 Metre Sprint, Long Jump and Triple Jump which was an opportunity I never imagined I would have. I was incredibly proud to be picked for Team GB but it wasn’t easy because I have to fundraise to cover the travel costs myself. However, it was a fantastic experience as it was my first ever International Athletics Championship. I feel very proud to be representing my country in elite level Deaf sports and be a positive role model to young deaf girls.”
