Leeds and Kirklees Health Champions

A group of people, mainly older adults, sit in a semi circle during a break in a presentation about Dementia. Two ladies who are standing are talking and laughing with attendees.

Our Health Champions project aims to improve access to health care services and information for people who are D/deaf, hard of hearing, sight impaired, severely sight impaired and Deafblind living in the Leeds and Kirklees areas.

We also aim to help medical professionals and support staff to increase their awareness and understanding of sensory impairments and become more skilled in communication with D/deaf, hard of hearing, Deafblind and visually impaired patients. This includes identifying communication challenges and training staff to be confident in their interactions with patients. We also address the accessibility of information from patients letters/forms through to health information guides.

The Health Champions project is funded by NHS Charities Together.

A boy with a hearing aid is sitting at the table playing a game, carefully removing bricks from a stack. A member of staff/volunteer is smiling as she watches.
