George is 12 years old and was born into a hearing family. George attends BID's Deaf Youth Club every Wednesday and has also taken part in holiday activities. The Youth Club provides an environment for young deaf people to interact, socialise and learn a new range of skills such as arts, sports, media work and internet safety. George loves his two cats, playing on his go-kart in the garden and using his iPad to make mini films.

George's Mum tells his story:
George is profoundly deaf and a BSL user so his access to the usual after school activities has been impossible to date. He felt lonely and frustrated as he saw his siblings going out and asked "Why can't I?" Being able to go to the Youth Club each week has made a huge difference to George's welfare, both socially and emotionally. It has also affected family life in a very positive way.

George's confidence has grown, he is more accepting of his deafness and he can relax because it's his environment. For a small part of the week, he doesn't have to exert all his energy into coping in a 'hearing' world. George is also noticeably less frustrated at home and at school which has helped his ability to learn. He also attended BID's Holiday Scheme too which was brilliant for giving him much needed deaf interaction in what would have been a very 'hearing' summer. BID's Sports & Youth Coordinator, Jo has organised some fantastic activities, many of which are deaf friendly.
