Youth Services: Holiday Club and our Fun Adventures

Our Youth Services remains to be an important part of BID Services provision for our young people in the communities we serve. As such, we provide a range of activities for children and young people with sensory impairments in and around Birmingham and the West Midlands through our weekly Youth Club and Holiday Scheme. Keep reading below to find out more about our Youth Services and to see the positive impact of our work with our young people.

Weekly Youth Club

We run a weekly Youth Club for our young people (8-14 years old) which primarily takes place at our Deaf Cultural Centre with some external activities depending on the choices and interests of our members. Our Weekly Youth Club is a key staple within our Youth Services since it was launched back in 2014 and remains to be a one of our popular activities.

Holiday Scheme

Alongside our weekly Youth Club, we offer a number of holiday activities for our young people who D/deaf, hard of hearing, CODA (Children of deaf adults) and siblings too. Activities are tailored and planned to be both fun and engaging and can range from jungle challenge,  sailing, climbing and volunteering with the National Trust.

Below you can read about all of our Youth Services fun adventures throughout the summer holidays and the October half term in the last year, and what we have planned this December for the Christmas Festivities:

Summer holidays:

Four weeks of activities through August, 24 young people attended aged 8 – 15. Activities were funded by BBC Children in Need and Birmingham HAF (Holiday and Activities Fund).

Activities were wide ranging including:

  • circus skills
  • cooking
  • dance
  • arts and crafts
  • football
  • outdoor adventure

Every day of the holiday scheme included physical activity, a freshly cooked meal for each child and opportunity to have fun in a safe and accessible environment, learn new skills and create lasting friendships.

What some of our youth club members thought about our fun activities?

“I really loved the football day – we got to play on the real pitch”

“Thank you for a great few weeks, my boys have really enjoyed it”

“Thank you music Sean, I loved playing trumpet and the Sign Song”

October Half Term:

During half term we hosted 2 days of Animation workshops, 16 young people attended.

Young people were supported to create their own short films – from story ideas, character creation, to using stop motion equipment to animate their videos. The young people were incredibly proud of their creations and came up with some brilliant innovative ideas.
