Sports Personality of the Year 2019

2019 ended with a bang for BID Services with the opportunity to interpret for Sports Personality of the Year for the second year running. It was wonderful to be asked to provide BSL Interpreters again for Sports Personality of the Year which was held on Sunday 15th December 2019 in Aberdeen.  Two Interpreters, Rosie Copeland and Liz Smith, provided support on the night doing an amazing job!  Our Co-ordination Team did fantastic work in arranging this with the BBC and supporting our Interpreters with all the travel arrangements and preparation needed so they could provide the best quality interpreting support on the night.  The event went without a glitch and was a very enjoyable experience for all!

Rosie tells us more about her experience Interpreting for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019:

“Interpreting for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019 was a brilliant experience. I was a bag of nerves arriving at Aberdeen Airport, a nice gentleman kindly helped me get my bag off the plane, turns out it was Graham Swan (England Cricketer & Strictly 2019 (I didn’t realise until we came into the arrivals hall and people were asking him for his autograph!). It was the first time I had interpreted for an event on this scale, I co-worked alongside Liz Smith and I really couldn’t have done it without her! She has interpreted for SPOTY before and was able to show me the ropes.

Highlights were seeing Lewis Capaldi and Emeli Sande rehearsing. Lewis Capaldi’s voice is spine-tinglinging gorgeous! And of course the after-show party, which we were able to enjoy as we weren’t working; we had a glass (or two) of well-earned fizz whilst gawping at all the celebs, before going home at 3am and then waking up at 5am to catch the flight home!

Sign me up for next year…!”
