Zurich's Challenge Day at Chesterberry residential home

In July, on a swelteringly hot Tuesday, 9 staff from Zurich took a day out of the office to bring the garden at Chesterberry, our residential home in Birmingham, back to life.

Chesterberry is home to 7 adults who are deaf and have additional needs. The garden at Chesterberry is certainly what you would call huge and is a sometimes overwhelming task for the residents and their staff to keep on top of. Over the years it has gotten tired and was very much in need of some TLC. Luckily for us Zurich were up to the challenge and after a preparatory visit to find out what the residents wanted from the garden they got to work fundraising for the materials and planning the day.

With the sun well and truly shining, on Tuesday morning at 9am the 9 strong team arrived, brushes and trowels at the ready. Hanging baskets and plant pots where planted up with glorious displays, a whole skip was filled with garden cuttings and waste and the tired furniture and pergola were given new lease of life being painted pink and blue, bringing some colour to the garden.

Despite the heat the team worked on and soon the garden was brought back to its former glory, offering a wonderful, lively space for the residents, their families and the staff to enjoy. The residents and staff put on cakes and drinks to thank the wonderful volunteers for all of their hard work and time when they were greeted with a surprise…Tracey and Claire, the team leaders from Zurich, informed them they had raised an additional £845.45 for Chesterberry! What a day!

We would like to say a massive thank you to the Zurich Volunteers, in particular Claire and Tracey, for arranging the day and braving the heat to transform our garden and also for the extremely generous donation. Chesterberry residents and staff are busy planning holidays for later this year so this donation will make a huge difference to this and other plans they have for the coming months.

Alan, the Home Manager at Chesterberry said: “The Zurich team worked incredibly hard and were very accommodating with all we asked them to do. I would like to personally thank them for the contribution they have made to our residents’ lives at Chesterberry and their extremely generous donation.”

Check out the wonderful before and after pictures from the challenge day. Thanks Zurich!
