BID offers a range of volunteer placements allowing involvement with the Deaf community and hard of hearing people.
Work for volunteers is matched to their communication skills. British Sign Language qualifications are not a necessity, as work exists with all levels of Hearing Impairment – Deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing, many of whom have additional needs.
The service aims to encourage an independent life for the clients by providing support for a variety of normal everyday activities that many of us take for granted. Things like going shopping, or a walk, social visits, visiting Deaf Clubs, hospital visits, playing cards, or just having a cup of tea and a chat.
Volunteers can also support BID by becoming involved in the many Fundraising activities that BID holds throughout the year.
All our volunteers are treated as unpaid members of staff, we refund all travel and ‘out-of-pocket’ expenses, provide full supervision and support and offer excellent training opportunities.

BID have a policy of undertaking an Enhanced Disclosure with the
Criminal Records Bureau (CRB Check) for all staff and volunteers.
Having a criminal record will not necessarily stop you from being
offered a voluntary placement.
BID has met the required standard to become an Approved Provider of the
National Standard for Mentoring and Befriending Foundation.
