Services — Community Services — Residential Home

Chesterberry was opened in December 1996 and is a registered residential care home in Erdington, Birmingham. The home accommodates up to seven deaf adults with additional needs and disabilities such as learning disability, autism, deaf/blind and challenging behaviour.
The home is regulated by the Commission for Social Care Inspectoration (CSCI), they inspect the home regularly and complete inspection reports which are accessible to the public.
Placements are mainly funded from health and social care services. Chesterberry was refurbished in 2007, expanding from five to seven beds and in meeting with care standards five rooms have en suite facilities; one wheelchair accessible and one ambulant, another two rooms share a good size bathroom. All bedroom sizes meet with care home requirements. The home is nicely decorated; residents have choice in decorating their rooms with décor and furniture they like. All appropriate equipment is fitted to enable Deaf people to be alerted to alarms, telephone and door bells. The home has a large communal lounge, kitchen and conservatory, leading onto a large and lovely garden.
Staffing is provided 365 days a year, 24 hours, having one sleep in and one waking night. We always aim to have a good ratio of Deaf and hearing staff to enable varied knowledge and understanding from the staff in relation to the diverse range of residents' needs and disabilities. British Sign Language is the preferred communication method and all staff must be able to communicate effectively and respect residents' idiosyncratic communication. Staff attends mandatory and additional training relevant to their job. Staff strive to provide a high quality care home environment.
Residents' likes and dislikes are always thought about when planning activities and new suggestions from staff and residents are recognised. Access to and use of local community facilities is encouraged and residents can attend events held at the local Deaf Cultural Centre if they wish to. We use the very good local transport links, local shops and amenities.
Independent skills are maintained by staff offering encouragement and confidence to help and support the residents achieve their activities and tasks. Family and friends are encouraged and welcomed to the home.
Co Key-Workers are allocated to residents, providing a link for the resident and possibly their relatives. Their role is to make sure the residents' holistic needs (cultural, emotional, physical, language, race, sex, disability and gender) are identified and met within the care and support internally and externally of Chesterberry. Residents have care plans and risk assessments which are person centred. Residents' needs are regularly reviewed and monitored by staff and external professionals.
Residents are empowered to participate in varied daily activities, both in and outside their home, for example;
• Cooking
• Art/craft
• Household tasks
• Cinema
• Leisure/sport
• Trips outs
• Shopping
• Holidays
• College/hobbies
