Our Campaigns  Past Campaigns  Deaf Awareness Week 4th to 10th May 2009

bid services had promoted Deaf Awareness week as part of UKCoD (UK Council on Deafness) campaign to raise awareness on deafness all over the UK.

bid services appeal to brummies to be more Deaf Aware.

With Deaf Awareness Week (4th – 10th May) fast approaching bid services, based in Ladywood, Birmingham, have been working hard to set up a series of events to help people get Deaf Aware.

The charity will be utilising a range of locations, including Chamberlain Square and the UK’s first purpose built Deaf Cultural Centre, to reach members of the public.  The well known local charity will also be providing free British Sign Language taster courses and free Deaf Awareness Training on Friday 8th May for one day only.

Event organiser and Campaigns and Information Officer Henry Skinner said: “Our first event is on the 4th May at Chamberlain Square where a small group of volunteers will be giving out Sign Language alphabet cards and chatting to people about Deafness and how to become more Deaf aware.

“The cards encourage people to try using British Sign Language by practicing the A-Z.  Our volunteers on the day will also be able to take people through it to help them get started.  It will only take five minutes so if you are passing through Chamberlain Square grab a card and get started!”

The second event that the charity has organised is on the 8th May where  a number of Deaf focussed organisations will come together for members of the public to learn more about what support and services are available to help the Deaf community.  There will also be free taster courses for British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness. “The exhibitions and taster sessions will give everyone who comes down on the day a well rounded introduction to Deafness and Deaf Culture.  There is something for everyone, from people who are looking for support, wanting to make their organisation or business more accessible and anyone that wants to try Sign Language.” continued Henry.

The schedule for the day on 8th May is shown on the right.

bid services volunteers will be taking down details of anyone interested in the taster sessions throughout Monday the 4th but if you are not passing through Chamberlain Square don’t worry!  Details of the event on Friday 8th May - along with course times and a timetable for the day will be shown soon.
