News — Play scheme @ Deaf Cultural Centre
The Deaf Cultural Centre has hosted a play scheme for deaf children living in Birmingham. The playscheme ran from Monday 15th to Friday 19th February and included a range of activities for the children aged 8-16, such as a drama workshop, indoor playground, a trip to the Think Tank, Wii, Badminton, 10 pin bowling, craft workshop, face painting and icebreaker games.
Funded by BID Services, The aim of the playscheme was to provide a fun packed holiday for deaf children as well as providing them with the opportunity to develop personal skills through having full access to a range of different activities. It also created the opportunity to work in partnership with parents, providing information, advice and support.
Robin Ash, Community Development Manager said “The organisation of this event has been brilliant and very beneficial for the deaf children involved. We had staff who supported the scheme throughout the week, providing the activities for the deaf children. It was excellent to see the children enjoying themselves and making new friends. At the end of the week I could see the children’s smiling faces and they had also developed new skills by being involved in the play scheme. There were quotes from the young members of the play scheme such as ’'the most fun thing that we enjoyed today was playing on the slide and the round small balls' (Indoor playground on Tuesday)”. The deaf children enjoyed mixing with children from a similar background and communication support was provided to enable them to understand what was happening.”
There are plans for future play schemes. Those interested should contact Robin Ash on 0121 246 6100, Textphone: 0121 246 6101, fax: 0121 246 6125 or email: info@deafculturalcentre.com.
