News — King Edwards Sign on to Launch Deaf Awareness Week
Students Narisha Bhakta, Hannah, and Izzie have all been working together to raise awareness of sign language and Deafness as part of the school’s Envision project. Envision is a national charity that works to encourage young people to take an active part in raising awareness of causes they are passionate about. “Raising awareness about Deafness is something we think is essential. There are so many people out there who don’t understand the impact Deafness can have and what it is like to overcome isolation and communication barriers everyday.” Said project group member Narisha.
Narisha, Hannah and Izzie helped bid services launch Deaf Awareness Week by bringing seven hundred students together to learn the BSL alphabet and some basic sign language, giving the pupils a chance to learn more about Deaf language and culture.
Henry Skinner, bid services Campaign and Information Officer, who led the Deaf Awareness session during the assembly praised the girls for all their hard work; “I think the Envision group have been amazing. They have organised fundraising events, been Deaf for a day and had the confidence to deliver important information about Deaf awareness in front of hundreds of students, contemporaries and teachers. The support they have given will make such a difference….we can’t thank them enough.”
The Envision group have also raised over four hundred pounds for the Ladywood based charity. Terry Yarnall - bid services fundraising manager – was presented with the generous donation, from the group at the close of the assembly. When asked about the value of the groups support Terry said: “To have such a young and vibrant group of people interested in supporting us is so positive. It shows that Deafness and Deaf Awareness is something that is important to people of all ages and that anyone can do their bit and support.”
bid services would like to thank everyone at King Edward VI School for taking part with a special thank you to the Envision project group for their continued support.
