News Get a taster of ‘Sign Up’

bid services will be at Edgbaston Street in the city centre on Monday 3rd August to promote their ‘Sign Up’ campaign. Staff will be running free sign language taster sessions throughout the day, giving people the opportunity to learn some basic phrases and staff will be available to explain what the ‘Sign Up’ campaign’s aims are. There will also be details on how to enrol for British Sign Language classes. Fingerspelling cards will also be given out to help a complete novice spell out their name.

British Sign Language is a language like any other, containing grammar and vocabulary however it uses the hands and face to converse rather than sound. For many deaf people it is their preferred method of communication as they cannot hear conversation and lip reading presents many difficulties and limitations. The ‘Sign Up’ campaign aims to give people with an interest in learning more about British Sign Language the opportunity to have a go.  This could be people who have a deaf person in their family, who work with deaf people as colleagues or customers, or indeed those who are interested in learning a new language.  If more people learnt British Sign Language there would be a reduction in communication barriers between deaf people and the ‘hearing’ community.

Enrolment for courses commences in early September.  You are welcome to call in to have a look around the Deaf Cultural Centre, meet the staff and enrol.

If you are interested in learning British Sign Language but are unable to attend on 3rd August, you can contact us at bid services by either phoning us on 0121 246 6100, fax: 0121 246 6161, email: bsl@bid.org.uk or check out in our campign section and click on the Sign Up’ link.
