News — Deaf Athletics Day
BID Services is working in partnership with other organisations including Deaf UK Athletics, NDCS, Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club and Birmingham Athletics Network to deliver a Deaf Athetics Day on Saturday 21st May, 2011 for deaf 8 - 18 year olds.
With funding from Street Games, this sporting event will be taking place at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham and has been specially tailored for anyone, regardless of ability, as long as they are over 8 years old. Activities for the day will include competitions, jumps, relays, sprints and throws. Deaf coaches, BSL interpreters and Sport Professionals will be present and there will be potential for the deaf child/young person to join their local Athletics Club with support or be handpicked by Deaf UK Athletics.
The one day special has been arranged as an extension of the Deaf Sports Project, designed to promote sports and allow deaf children and young people to try different and new sports. This follows a series of consultations BID undertook last year with educational establishments and youth clubs/groups to find out about the kind of sports they wanted to try. Deafness and hearing impairment can exclude young people from accessing mainstream sport provision, and they become isolated as a result. The Deaf Sports Project has been designed to engage with young deaf people and empower them to experience and learn different and new sports never before tried.
All children and young people must be booked/registered prior to the event. Total cost for the day is £2.50 per child. Places must be booked and paid in advance and are given on a first come, first served basis.
