Local Charity BID services with Deaf people
is hoping to make 2008 a good
year for communication.
The charity, which is campaigning to
increase the number of sign language
learners in Birmingham
and the West Midlands, is continuing to raise
awareness about effectively communicating
with Deaf people through the
release of their top 5 communication tips
for service providers and retailers.
BID’s Top 5 Tips are:
1) Don’t be nervous – try to be open and communicate
naturally
2) Use gesture and body movements to help explain
where something is located or when directing someone
3) Make sure the person has a good view of your face
and the lighting is good - this helps with lip-reading and clearly shows your
facial expression
4) Reduce background noise and use your loop system –
this is especially helpful for hearing aid users
5) Have a pen a paper ready
Anthony Beeby, Campaigns Manager at BID
believes that big changes can be
made with these small recommendations.
“Our communications tips are just 5 little
examples of how shop owners, retail
staff and other service providers can make
a real difference. We often
receive reports from the Deaf community
that they experience communication
barriers daily, which is very upsetting and
disheartening.
“These tips will reduce some of the
barriers faced. They won’t solve all of
the
problems but they are a starting point and
we are hoping that people who see the difference will take the next step of
Deaf Awareness Training or learning British Sign Language.”
BID also recommend being patient and taking
a little more time if it is needed
as communication is always better between
people when they are relaxed
and calm.
“One of the main factors in bad
communication is stress. People become
agitated and uncomfortable and what little
communication exists breaks down
even further!” continued Anthony.
To develop a full and well rounded
understanding of Deafness and Deaf
issues a Deaf Awareness Training Course is
recommended.

Language or booking a Deaf
